So she’s publishing a book
Miss Gould’s book proposal has now been “leaked” to the press. I actually discovered this on Gawker’s home page, a site I have never looked at, until today (seriously); Yes, that’s the website that she spurned in her NYTimes article (not that I blame her).
Gawker actually links you to a New York Magazine article on her upcoming book — And the Heart Says, “Whatever.“ The article’s introduction is on the verge of brutal:
Oh God. We seem to have gotten a copy of former Gawker editor–recent Times Magazine cover subject–chronic-oversharer Emily Gould’s book proposal, And the Heart Says, “Whatever.” We’re not going to pass judgment, not even about the title.
She obviously has something in her writing, or in her writing style, that attracts people — I’ll read her book (which is a “fictional memoir” – I think that’s the best way to describe this “new genre.” It certainly is an accurate description of our ole pal, James Frey. And David Sedaris is now discussing his own creative embellishments). An image of one paragraph from the Gould mauscript was published by New York Magazine. Most of the comments are rather…negative (yes, I know I should not be surprised).
I just don’t feel ready to pass judgement based on one paragraph.

The thing I find appealing about her writing is her unhindered ability to bare all. I wish I saw more writing like hers in other blogs, but most people just aren’t that candid, and it is hard to be–and obviously there are repercussions, as stated in her original article. At any rate, what’s intriguing (for me) is her honesty, and it doesn’t hurt that the events she describes are a little on the sensational side.
Thanks for posting this! I had no idea she had a book deal & I’m a little surprised. I completely agree with you, btw. No one should pass judgement on one small paragraph. I will be reading her book as well.
I’ve been meaning to respond to this one for a while.
I read that NYT magazine article, and wrote a blog entry, about Miss Emily Gould a few weeks ago. What interested me is how the article asked if you one could pursue blogging fame too hard. Me, I try to keep my feet on the ground, and remind myself it’s not about the glitz and glamour. Perez Hilton might enjoy the limelight, but it’s not for me.
By the way, did you see when Jimmy Kimmle grilled Gould on CNN? Best trainwreck ever!
Travis, Yeah I watched the Kimmle clip on You Tube. And you’re right — trainWRECK! I completely agree with you — Perez Hilton is not who I take my blogging cue from!
Thanks for commenting…better late than never. And this topic will never be old.
